Mitigating the Risk of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) in Unconventional Resources Drilling Operation

“Unconventional Resources (UR) drilling operations pose significant challenges due to the presence of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM). NORM contamination can occur during drilling, completion, and production phases, exposing workers, communities, and the environment to radiation hazards. This paper discusses the impact of NORM on unconventional resources drilling operations, highlighting the risks and consequences of inadequate handling and disposal.

Exposure to NORM can result in occupational illnesses, environmental pollution, and economic losses. Moreover, non-compliance with regulatory requirements can lead to costly fines and reputational damage. Effective NORM management is therefore crucial to minimizing risks and ensuring sustainable operations.

This paper presents a comprehensive framework for mitigating NORM-related risks in unconventional resources drilling operations. Key components include:

• Identification and characterization of NORM sources
• Risks associated with NORM
• Regulatory Framework
• Effective NORM management strategies

Through a combination of theoretical research and practical applications, this paper provides valuable insights into the complexities of NORM management in unconventional resources drilling operations. Recommendations for improving NORM handling and disposal practices are presented, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among regulators, operators, and service providers to achieve optimal outcomes.”
