INTRODUCTION
Safety Management Systems must be risk-based, management-led and audit driven. This exciting workshop, based on many years of auditing experience, introduces the attendees to the intricacies of auditing such a structured Safety Management System (SMS). The workshop explains in detail the audit and review process. Using the Example SMS, the sections, elements, and minimum standards of the system are explained, and the scoring criteria is demonstrated. Auditing of lagging as well as leading indicators is shown. Audit protocols are provided, and attendees participate in an audit of an SMS. Differences between inspections and audits are clarified. Review and scoring of documented verification evidence is practiced by attendees during hands-on exercises during the workshop. Both pre-audit and post-audit activities are explained as well as the audit process timeline.
